Web Hosting
Most people who get a domain name will need to find a web hosting provider. Most people opt to use what the industry calls "shared" web hosting accounts. A shared hosting account is where you rent a small amount of space on a server which is shared among many other users. This is an inexpensive way to get started. But, there are several alternatives for you to consider. These alternatives offer advantages over simple web hosting. The first enhanced alternative is a reseller account. A reseller account allows you to host multiple domain names on a single account. This will enable you to act as a web hosting provider and host web sites of other individuals. But, it will also allow you to host more than one of your own domains. Suppose that after you have one web site up and running you will want to put up another web site. If you use regular accounts, you will need to pay for a second account. But, with a reseller account, you can simply add you new domain name to your current account with no extra charge. There are limits to your reseller account of course. These typically include limits on total disk space and monthly data transfer. Given that you stay within your limits on disk space and monthly data transfer, you can normally add as many domains to your account and you want. The second alternative is a virtual dedicated server. A virtual dedicated server lets you run your sites as if you had your own "dedicated" server, except it is cheaper because you are really just using part of a server that has been split into multiple virtual dedicated servers. You can find out more about this by searching Google for "virtual dedicated hosting". Virtuozzo is the main commercial software that web hosts use to run virtual hosting services. You will find virtual dedicated server accounts starting at just $30 a month. You'll get a much larger chunk of bandwidth compared to shared hosting, and none of the problems that go with a shared host. You can also get multiple IP addresses that are exclusive to your sites. So what's the catch? Not much. You'll probably spend a bit more on hosting each month. The main disadvantage of upgrading to virtual dedicated hosting is that you will need to be more technically proficient so that you can administer the server. So, you do have options when you are looking or a web host. Be sure to examine the details of the hosting provider so you get what you expect.
