Search engine optimization (SEO) is simply the process of improving your website so it appears closer to the top of the search engine results for specific search terms.
The basis for search engine optimization is trying to understand how the search engines rank websites. That is, those involved in search engine optimization try to "reverse engineer" the search engine's algorithm. Once they know, or think they know, how the algorithm works, they can adjust a website to optimally satisfy the requirements of the algorithm.
Various factors are thought to be included in the ranking algorithms. Though algorithms change, many of these factors are still considered important.
- Backlinks Backlinks are links to your site from other websites. Most people believe that the link text used in a link helps search engines learn about the topic of your site or page. The more backlinks you have using a keyword phrase the more likely your site or page relates to that topic. But, the link text for all backlinks should not be all the same since that look artificial.
- Backlink site quality The quality of the site linking to your site is thought to be important. Sites that have good content that link to your site are more valuable than sites created just to link to other sites.
- Keyword density The use of keyword phrases on your site helps search engines learn what your site is all about. While no optimum density for your selected keyword phrases exists, most people think that about 1% to 5% of the words on your page should be your most important keyword phrase.
- Related keywords Pages about a particular topic should have keywords that are related to the main keyword phrase. For example, if your page is about computers, you may want to include related keywords such as software, hardware, computing, laptop, and PC.
- Avoid duplicate content Many article directories and private label rights sites offer content you can include on your site. If this content is also found on other sites, sometime only one page containing that content will be shown in the search engine results. This is called the duplicate content penalty. It is meant to reduce the clutter in search engine results listings.
- META tags META tags appear in the "head" section of each web page. The most important META tag is the "title" tag. This is often used in search engine results as the link to your site. It also tells the search engine what you page is about.
- Fresh content Content that is frequently updated is often thought by search engines to be more important than older content.
You should also observe competitive sites similar to your site. Investigate their backlinks, keyword density, and other factors to see what they are doing to rank better than your site. Some people use specialized software that automatically compares sites and provides statistics about high ranking sites.
