In today's global economy, large corporations are moving jobs to countries with cheap labor. Manufacturing jobs as well as technical jobs are being filled by low wage foreign labor. You probably know that jobs such as help desk call centers are fleeing the United States. Even tutoring of students can not be done over the Internet in cheap labor foreign countries.

What can you do about it? On a global scale, you cannot overcome the political contributions of large, multi-national corporations who are benefiting from this "free trade" movement. But, on an individual scale you can get a better education so you can offer skills and talents not yet available in cheap foreign markets.

Today's schools, colleges, and universities are offering education in many marketable skill sets that are required in the United States. But, too many people simply get a degree and think they will magically be hired by a company simply because they have a degree. Unfortunately, today there is fierce competition for jobs from other graduates as well as highly skilled immigrants.

Well before you graduate you should establish links to corporations that could potentially hire you. You may take a summer internship to get familiar with the politics and procedures of your prospective company. At the same time, employees and management can get acquainted with you and your technical as well as people skills.

As you get close to graduation and begin to apply and interview for jobs, make sure to mention your work experience as a summer intern. Let the interviewer know that you not only possess technical knowledge, but that you understand corporate life and politics and possess the necessary people skills to work effectively in a corporate environment. This basket of skills is something few newly graduated people can offer.

If you do not have any specific skill sets to offer potential employers, there is still time to make yourself marketable as a job candidate by going back to school. Check you local community colleges and universities to see how you can gain today's in demand skills.
