Business Planning and Promotion

If you are interested in starting a new business or planning to expand an existing business, you'll need to have a business plan.

Inventors, whether banks or potential stock holders, will need to know what you plan to do and how you plan to do it. Even if you are just starting up a home-based business, your family will need to know what you are going to be spending time doing so they can support and encourage you.

Many small businesses fail to develop a business plan. And, is it any wonder that most small business fail within 5 years?

Many business owners are sure that having developed a written business plan is one of the keys to their present success. Creating a business plan forces you to contemplate possible obstacles to your business and prepares you to find solutions that will help you to overcome them.

If you have never seen a business plan before you may be concerned that it is too difficult for you to develop on your own. But, a business plan is a lot less difficult than facing looming bills that you can't pay because you didn't fully think out what you were about to commit your time and energy to achieve.

By developing a business plan you will be guided to think about, research, and analyze such concepts as:

  • Products and Services Describe just what services or products you will provide.
  • Business Participants State who will partner with your business to supply products, services, and manpower.
  • Market Analysis Identify who your potential customers will be, why they need your product or service, and the potential for growth.
  • Management Define how your business will be managed and operated.
  • Objectives State how profitable your business will be, what distinguishes your business from existing businesses, and your plans for expansion.
  • Mission What will you and every employee try to accomplish?,
  • Competition Describe the competition and the potential problems they will present to your success.
  • Risks Describe the risks that could possible come from competition, suppliers, the economy, operating problems, and other factors.
  • Startup Costs Describe what it will take to get your business into operation.
  • Advertising Estimate what it will take to promote your name and product or services to your potential customers during startup and on an ongoing basis.
  • There are services available on the Internet to help you write your business plan.

Your business plan will become your guide, help target your time and activities, and become your silent business partner - indicating where you need to improve and helping you stay one step ahead of your competition. Make it a priority to have this crucial road map for your business.
