Why You Need Credit Cards
Just about everyone in the United States has one or more credit cards. Credit card companies are targeted grade school children for credit cards. From young teenagers to retirees, every has and every uses credit cards.
Every media outlet has advertising about the use of credit cards. You can easily purchase almost anything with a credit card. But, do you really understand what a credit card is? Do you understand the risks and rewards of credit cards? A credit card is simply an agreement you have with a financial institution that they will loan you money for various purposes. In return, you will pay back the full amount of the loan on the due date or the financial institution will charge you a hearty rate of interest for the loan. The usual rates of interest on unpaid loans is 12 to 25%. Credit cards are simply ways for you to get an unsecured personal loan. While you may think that you are paying for your purchases with your credit card, you are actually using the bank's money to purchase your products or services. You are getting a loan to finance the purchase. Credit cards are great because they are convenient. You don't have to carry cash to make a purchase. When you find an item you want you can just "charge it." But, that convenience also carries a danger. Credit cards make it too convenient to acquire more than you can afford. When you can't pay your loan off, you're stuck with paying high interest rates for that loan. And, eventually, when you reach your credit limit you can't borrow any more money for more items. Many people in the United States are $5,000 to $10,000 or more in debt because they "bought" too much using their credit cards. Creating and living within budget and learning discipline are important character traits many people never develop. Credit cards are also helpful for emergencies. If your car develops a problem or your water heater fails, you need to get them repaired. You probably don't have time to go the bank and withdraw money so you pay with a credit card. In this way, credit cards are a great resource. But, don't think everything you want an emergency purchase. Credit cards also allow you to go places without a lot of cash. They provide security for you. While credit cards limit your loss when unauthorized charges are made, money is lost once it's stolen. So, when you travel you don't need to take lots of cash or even travelers checks. Your credit cards are often all you need. Enjoy your credit cards because they make your life easier. But, don't let your credit cards create a nightmare! Learn to use your credit responsibly. We hope the following credit card resources interesting and helpful.
